What is the Federal Register, and how do I read this page?
The Federal Register is the daily journal of the U.S. government. Every weekday, it publishes proposed regulations, final regulations, executive orders, agency notices, and other official documents. If a rule is going to apply to your contracts, it shows up here first, before it ever lands in the FAR you read every day.
For contracting officers, this is where FAR changes, DFARS changes, CAS changes, and acquisition-related agency rules originate. The cards below are the relevant ones, pulled daily from FederalRegister.gov.
Document types you'll see
- Proposed rule
- The agency wants to make a change. Draft published for public comment. Not in effect yet.
- Final rule
- The change is finalized. Has an effective date. Update templates and procedures by then.
- Interim final rule
- Effective immediately, but the agency still wants feedback.
- Notice
- Information from an agency. May or may not affect your contracts.
- Information collection
- Usually forms, reporting, or paperwork burden under the Paperwork Reduction Act.
You can comment on proposed rules
When an agency publishes a proposed rule, the public can submit comments before it gets finalized. That includes you, even if you've never thought of yourself as someone who comments on regulations.
The rule will list a comment closing date and a submission method (usually regulations.gov). If you have practical concerns about how it will work in the field, like implementation problems, ambiguities, or unintended consequences, write them up and submit them. Agencies are required to consider comments before finalizing.
You don't have to be a lawyer. A real, fact-based concern from someone who does the work carries weight.
Reading the page below. The cards are pulled daily from FederalRegister.gov. Each one shows the document type, the agency, the stage, and any due dates. Use the filters to narrow to FAR / DFARS / CAS, open comment periods, or monitor-only items. You won't need most entries. But when something does affect your buying lane, this is the first place you'll see it.
